They say parenting is one of few jobs that the better you do, the farther they will fly.

Our son is brilliant. Smart. Funny. Loving.

He’s also a typical teenager.

Singularly focused. Selfish. Short-sighted.

Nothing we can say will convince him that school matters. That grades will impact his future. That life after school is not “gonna be way easier.”

Mel Robbins says, ‘let them’. That is soooo much easier said than done!

Sure, let them skip school and pay for that decision in the future.

Let them scrape by and struggle to find a job.

Let them prioritize everything but school. But working. But learning.

As a parent, we can’t help but see their future through our own experience. Through the life we’ve led.

I think every parent wants the best for their kids. Trusting them to find their happy might be harder than ‘letting them!’
